Volvo EX30, quick but small

In April 2025, we test drove the Volvo EX30.

The Volvo EX30 is an electric subcompact crossover SUV. It comes in RWD and AWD. It has a range of up to 420km. It starts at $53,700 MSRP.

The Volvo EX30 is a small SUV. It is short in height and low to the ground, like a sedan. I like the frameless mirrors. Volvo has improved a lot on their design. I like how it looks on the outside and inside. There is digital key. “When unlocking or approaching the car, LED lamps integrated into the door mirrors light the ground close to the car for your convenience.” The interior of the EX30 has a minimalistic and modern look. It features a 12.3” vertical centre display, which is based on Google’s system. It is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay. It supports over-the-air software update. There is no instrument cluster in front of the driver. There are USB-C ports in the cabin, as well as a 12-volt power outlet. There are heated front seats and heated steering wheel. There is a panoramic sunroof. There is an open storage area in the centre console, which is perfect for ladies to place their handbag. “At the front, there are two sliding cupholders hidden in the front armrest. Instead of a traditional glove box, there’s a centrally positioned storage for smaller items below the centre display that’s easily accessible from both the front seats.” At the rear section of the tunnel console, there is a removable storage box, which can be used as a trash bin. There isn’t much space for the rear passengers. There is not enough leg room. There is no hump on the ground of the back seats. The trunk and frunk are small.

“According to Volvo, the EX30 has the smallest lifetime carbon footprint of any Volvo model to date. It has been achieved in part through a body that contains 25% recycled aluminium, 17% recycled steel and 17% recycled plastic. Several recycled and renewable materials are used to upholster the seats, dashboard and doors, including old denim, flax and a wool blend that also contains approximately 70% recycled polyester.”

The Volvo EX30 drives alright. The steering wheel is too thin for my likings. There is one pedal drive. The drive is quiet and smooth. The suspension isn’t as good as I thought it would be for a Volvo. The EX30 is low key very quick. In AWD, it does 0 to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds and delivers 422hp. Its top speed is 180km/h. The EX30 can tow of up to 900kg and have a roof load max weight of 75kg.

The Volvo EX30 is a small vehicle. It is smaller than a mid-size sedan. It is not that comfortable sitting in the back seat. The ride is a bit bumpy. I wouldn’t recommend this EV.
